Culburra Ladies Bowls
Our ladies returned home from the State Carnival in Tuncurry. Kristi Buckley did us proud in the Mixed Pairs with one win and 2 tie break games.Our Senior 4’s team of Carol Blackshaw, Eileen Hunter, Lorraine Foster and Jenny Castellan were defeated in the first round, but by all accounts enjoyed the experience and competition – congratulations on representing Culburra at State level.
The first round of the Major Minor Triples was played, with Narelle Wetstyn, Helen Neilsen and Trish Bailey defeating Carol Blackshaw, Lorraine Foster (sub) and Jean Eagleton – good luck to all in round 2.
Three games of triples and one of pairs was played on Tuesday by our Social ladies. Lynne McKee and Sandra Annetts defeated Marea Challender and June Jones, Maree Guilfoyle, Carol Turton and Elaine Parkinson defeated Margaret Gilchrist, Joy Hanneman and Jean Eagleton, Ruth Tinsley (swinger), Anne Dwyer and Lyn Hulbert defeated Ruth Tinsley, Narelle Wetstyn and Helen Neilsen, while Ruby Salmon, Robyn Herbert and Anne McCauley had a draw with Dawn Neville, Trish Bailey and Nancye Carre.
The Thursday social winners were Ruby Salmon, Jan Palmer and Lyn Hulbert over Anne Dwyer, Lynne McKee and Jenny Castellan, Carol Turton, Ruth Tinsley and Kim Rudd over Annette Barry, Joy Hanneman and Nancye Carre, Eileen Hunter, Robin Bryan, Marea Challender and Anne McCauley over Chris Fletcher, Ruth Joannou, Robyn Herbert and Sandra Annetts.
The next evening of Twilightbowlswill be on Thursday 3rd November. Bookings for this mixed mufti evening must be made by 4.00 pm and play will commence at 5.00 pm. Visitors are most welcome and can make booking on 0488 729 229. This number can also be used to book for Wednesday and Thursday social play with bookings required by 12 noon.
Recent social Wednesday and Saturday play has resulted in some very competitive matches. A pairs match that was tied at end 16 saw the match tied again at end 21 but victory on a count back went to Harry Harrop and David Lambert over Mick Vassallo and Rob Folkard. In another pairs match Bob Holdaway and Ken Crocker made a vain attempt to take the lead over the final five ends but failed by a few shots at overtaking BrianPovey and Lindsay McNamara.
Col Good has had two matches of triples and reached the winners circle in both. On Wednesday 26th he skipped Peter Haddon and Ken Stephens to victory over Arch Mackinnon, Tom Froggatt and Peter Webb and then on Saturday 20th skipped Deb Folkard and Tom Froggatt to a five shot win against the competitive trio of Peter Webb, David Lambert and Rob Folkard. The members were pleased to welcome three visiting bowlers from North Sydney last Saturday.

Wednesday saw a semi-final match of the Club Minor Pairs Championship as well as some Social Bowls. On Saturday, the two teams of the Bowls NSW Club Challenge completed matches against Warilla at Ex-Servo’s and Bomaderry at Bomaderry. A Social Bowls game of pairs was played at Ex-Servo’s as well.
Wednesday 26th October was a cool, cloudy day with a slight NE breeze. The greens were running at a medium pace.Rink 1 held the first match of the semi-finals of the Club Minor Pairs championship. Greg Morphett and David Solomon played well to be 14 all at the 10th end. The experience and expertise of Ian Abberley and Steve Hollington shone through as they wrestled the match away Greg and David to run out deserved winners by 37 to 17 shots.
Rink 2 resulted in the match of the week. Paul Takac and Graham Mills got away to a great start with a 1 shot lead after the first end followed by a superb 3 shot win on the 3rd end. Not to be outdone, Michael Hill and Mick Edwards replied with a steadying 1 on the next end , followed by a fantastic 3 on the 5th end to take the lead. An outstanding 5 by Michael and Mick on the 11th end saw them take control of the game and extend their lead by 20 to 14 shots on the 18th end. The grit and determination of Paul and Graham burst into the game and they stopped the rot by winning the next end by 2 shots and the penultimate end by 1 shot to enter the last end only 3 shots behind. Could they pull out the big one and win the game with a 4 shot end? No, they however managed a fabulous 3 shot win to tie the game. Wow, who won? Michael Hill and Mick Edwards won the count-back by 11 ends to 10. What an exciting end to a marvellous game.
Rink 3 witnessed another close game with Garry Way and Joe Mejlak playing superbly to win by 20 to 14 shots.Rink 4 John O’Dell and Steve Holden played fantastic bowls to trounce their opposition by 28 shots to 11.Rink 5 saw Garry Thurston and Harry Pierce play with great concentration to crush their opponents by 29 to 14 shots.Rink 6 resulted in a close game when Tommy Smith and Ken Taket just outlasted their opposition to bring home the bacon by 26 shots to 21.

Huskisson Women’s minor singles winner Lynne Noon and runner-up Renee Lanzini.
The final of the Minor Singles was played on Tuesday 25th October between Lynne Noon and Renee Lanzini. The game was played in fine weather and there were many excellent bowls delivered by both women. The game was enjoyed by a large number of spectators.
Lynneplayed consistently good bowling during the heats and semi-finals andmaintained her good form leading throughout the finals match. Renee has also been playing very well and by the 20th-end the score was19-14. From there, Lynnewent on to consolidate her strong position and take out the title 25-15.
Congratulations to Lynne Noon on being the Huskisson Minor Singles Champion for 2016 and also to Renee Lanzini on being the runner-up.

The second semi-final of the Mixed Pairs was played in sunny conditions on Saturday, October 29. This was a very close game with the final result played out on an extra end. Kaitlin Shaw and Howard Duncan opened the scoring with a quick comeback from Joanne Shaw and Anthony Fisher tying the score on the 3rd end. Jo and Anthony continued to lead until the 18th end when Kaitlin and Howard came from behind to equal the score on the 21st end, 14 all. Anthony sealed the win with his lastbowl. Congratulations go to Joanne and Anthony on their win and also to Kaitlin and Howard for their outstandingbowls. The final should be a fantastic game to watch.

Terry Castle, Terry McMillan and Chris Harbrow winners of the 2016 Ladies Toohey’s Triples tournament
Very windy conditions and a fast green were the order of the day on Sunday, October 30, for the 2016 Ladies Toohey’s Triples tournament. The winners for this year were Terry McMillan, Terry Castle and Chris Harbrow.Runners up were Stephen Bowerman, Lesley Harbrow and Dennis Beazley. Jane Davis, Marty Gehrke and Garry Manning came in third. The AM prize was won by Sam Bowerman, Duncan Howard and Bob Fowler with the PM prize going to Dianne Dawes, Pauli Kennedy and Phill Bowerman.
