Busy week for local seniors

Shire president Angelo Logiudice said the ethos behind the annual festival was about promoting a “celebration of later life”for the seniors in our community.

“Seniors Week provides people with the opportunity to try new activities or be exposed to different facets of community life,” he said.

The week kicks off on November 7 with a traditional Noongar Smoking Ceremony conducted at the Donnybrook Community Resource Centre by local Noongar Elder Maureen Hill. This ceremony will welcome in the new CRC committee and cleanse the Community Resource Centre. The ceremony will be followed by a “Time on Country”Bus Trip for Aboriginal Elders to the Wellington National Park.

The main event for the week is a bus trip to “Discover Greenbushes”on November 10. For just $10 per head,the day sets offwith a guided tour of Greenbushes Discovery Centrefollowed by an afternoon with Dr Per Christensen who will lead the group on a tour of Schwenke’s Dam, highlighting some of the unique characteristics of this award winning mine rehabilitation site.

Included in the entry fee is morning tea and lunch by Tasty Edibles, plus return bus transport and all tour entry fees. Bookings are essential for the bus tour and can be made by phoning the Shire Office on 9780 4200 by 4pm on November 8.

You can join a free “come ‘n try” bootscooting class at Donnybrook Masonic Lodge on November 9 starting at 11am.Non-grip shoes and comfortable clothes are recommended.

Local seniors will be treated to free entry to the Donnybrook Recreation Centre pool and all health and fitness programs during the week.

Seniors are also invited to attend a Donnybrook CRC event called “meet the new Shire CEO, Ben Rose”, as he talks with local community organisations and businesses at a business sundowner. Come along and have a chat with local people about topics of interest to your business or organisation. The event will be held on November 11at 5:30pm at the Donnybrook Recreation Centre.
